Pit box blunder: Button looked up too late
It was undoubtedly the most bizarre moment of the Chinese Grand Prix: Jenson Button was in the lead as he entered the pit lane ahead of Sebastian Vettel for his first stop of the race. But rather than homing in on his own McLaren crew, the Englishman turned in prematurely and found himself surrounded by Red Bull mechanics. They quickly shooed the illegal parker on his way, as reigning world champion Vettel was bearing down on them.
The misunderstanding ultimately robbed Button of a podium finish, but perhaps even worse, made him the laughing stock of the spectators and pundits. The magical attraction of the Red Bull box has been seen before – namely in the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix when Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari also took a wrong turn and parked up with the sister outfit.
“It was completely my fault,” Button told his team apologetically after the race. “I was looking down and making some adjustments on the steering wheel, which is what we always do when we’re coming in for a pit stop. I looked up again, saw the pit crew, thought I had already reached my box and turned off. When I came to a halt, something didn’t seem right. But that sort of thing happens in the heat of battle.”
Sebastian Vettel saw the funny side of Button’s error: “If he had taken my tyres, I’m not sure whether the McLaren crew would have given me his. I like to think they would have.”
